Artist Mary L. Johnson

The detail involved in these carvings is amazing, from the hand-carved feet (on the flying and standing birds) to the fine amount of cutting, carving, wood-burning, and painting. not only the body gets this fine amount of detail, but the head, wings, and each individual feather get the same attention and quality workmanship. The wood-burning is so finely detailed that it includes every shaft and barb in each feather. the details for painting each bird is taken from actual living examples or from photographs.

it is not unusual for these pieces to be mistaken for the real thing, often startling people when they realize that the bird is there, even on close examination people have asked how to train the birds to be so still, or if the artist (or collector) raises the birds! these carvings have such exquisite detail that they have received first place and best of show in every show entered!
